HEARTHBOARD FRAME

Install Hearthboard Frame

Download the signed Android app, install it on your frame, and pair your iPhone.

Before you begin

Check the compatibility guide first. These steps assume you can access Android settings and install APKs on your frame. The app does not require Google Play Services.

Use only the signed APK linked from Hearthboard Frame or Downloads & releases. If there is no public release listed, the public beta is not available yet.

1. Allow installation from your chosen source

On Android 8.0 and newer, allow Install unknown apps for the particular browser or Files app you are using. On Android 6 and 7, look for Settings → Security → Unknown sources. Names vary by manufacturer.

Allow the source needed for this installation. You can turn the setting off again afterward. Developer options and USB debugging are only necessary if you choose the ADB installation method.

2. Download and install the APK

For developers with ADB already configured, replace the path below with the downloaded APK path. Select the intended device explicitly if more than one is connected.

  1. Open the Hearthboard Frame page on the frame’s browser and download the APK, or copy the downloaded APK to microSD and open it from Files.
  2. Review the Android installation prompt and install the app.
  3. Open Hearthboard Frame. The installed app may still use the name Hearthboard Frame (beta).
  4. If Android presents its first-time full-screen explanation, dismiss it to continue.
adb -s YOUR_FRAME_SERIAL install -r /path/to/hearthboard-frame.apk

3. Pair with your iPhone

  1. Connect the frame and iPhone to the same home network. Avoid a guest network that isolates devices.
  2. Open Hearthboard on the iPhone and select the frame in Nearby.
  3. Compare the six digits and confirm on the frame if they match. Cancel if they differ.
  4. Alternatively, choose the QR or typed-code method. Reopen Pair iPhone from the frame’s settings if the pairing window has closed.
  5. Add Clock and Weather first, then arrange your dashboard.

4. Keep it ready

Open the frame’s gear menu and choose Set as home app if Android permits it. Selecting Hearthboard as the default Home app is the recommended way to return to the dashboard after reboot.

On some firmware, also allow automatic startup or exempt Hearthboard from battery optimization. Check a real reboot before relying on unattended startup. Grant Modify system settings if you want system backlight control.

5. Add your household data

Weather is fetched by the frame. Calendar, reminders, chores, and photos come from a paired iPad running Hearthboard. Keep that host available for fresh data.

Connect service widgets through the companion when needed. Supported features are reported by the frame so the companion can show controls appropriate to that device.
