Troubleshooting
Connection checks, pairing problems, missing feeds, and useful bug reports.
My display is missing from Nearby
- Confirm the display is awake and connected to Wi-Fi. A battery-powered Ink board may be asleep; press a button to wake it.
- Confirm your phone has rejoined home Wi-Fi after Ink setup. It should no longer be on Hearthboard-XXXX.
- Check Local Network permission for Hearthboard on iPhone.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi and client isolation. Discovery needs local multicast to pass between the devices.
- If discovery is blocked but local routing works, use Connect by Address with the display’s local IP and reported port. The preferred port is 47810.
Pairing expired or the codes do not match
Reopen pairing on the display. On Ink, hold Right for five seconds. On Frame, open the gear and choose Pair iPhone. Keep both devices available while you complete the exchange.
Cancel any attempt where the digits differ. If the window expired or an attempt is busy, wait for it to clear and retry. QR and typed-code fallback are available when the corresponding pairing window is open.
Widgets are empty or out of date
Test Clock and Weather first to distinguish the display connection from a missing external feed. Check that the iPad feed host is paired, awake as needed, and allowed to access its data.
Check service sign-ins for Home Assistant, Plex, and Frigate. On Ink, battery sleep intentionally delays changes; USB keeps the board connected for troubleshooting.
The APK will not install
Check the published minimum Android version and that APK installation is allowed for the source you used. Make sure the downloaded file is complete and its checksum matches.
A signing mismatch or downgrade can prevent installation over an existing build. Keep the old installation until you understand the mismatch; deleting it can lose settings and pairings. Stock frame restrictions require a separate compatibility investigation.
Report a reproducible problem
- Product: Hearthboard Ink or Hearthboard Frame.
- Exact board or frame model, Android/firmware version, and Hearthboard release version.
- Steps to reproduce, what you expected, and what happened.
- Whether the display is on USB or battery, and whether both devices are on the same network.
- A screenshot or a short, redacted log if it helps.
